As he shows which human devastations are indelible, and which examples of our highest art and culture would endure longest, Weisman’s narrative ultimately drives toward a radical but persuasive solution that doesn’t depend on our demise. This book is a beautiful thought experiment. What would happen to the world without us? Thankfully the book doesn’t dwell so much on the absence of humanity, but how the things that humans have constructed will not last forever. It looks at examples around the world where this has already happened. He takes apart the physics and chemistry of our world falling apart and how nature would find a way to take it back. My favourite example was the discussion about what it would take to return New York City to an island with rivers flowing through it again – it would take very little. A great read. – @popsciguyoz
